Therapy for Young Minds
Often referred to as child or adolescent therapy, this focuses on supporting the multi-dimensional aspects of a child’s health and wellbeing, such as the psychological, emotional and behavioural domains which may be impacting on their level of performance and quality of life.
About this service
We pride ourselves in helping the future of our nation to navigate life’s challenges, which may arise from a range of issues such as developmental differences, adversities, difficult transitions or social issues. As with all our work, we draw upon a wide range of tools to support young people, their parents and those who care for and support them, with each of our Therapist’s having their own clinical specialisms.
For younger children interventions offered may include elements of play, art, creative writing and storytelling which are more natural forms of expression for children and used to help them develop resilience and skills in emotional regulation or to process trauma. Supporting children around key transitions, such as returning to school, and carer education and support can also be helpful, to help address issues impacting upon the family unit as a whole or which cause chronic anxiety and hyperarousal.
Adolescents often respond well to traditional Talking Therapy approaches and interventions such EMDR, anxiety management, cognitive restructuring training and coping skills training which are advantageous when supporting individuals to develop increased self-esteem and an enhanced sense of confidence, capability and self-worth.
Our Therapists are also specialists in supporting young people within school settings to facilitate them to achieve optimum academic attainment, with Chris specialising in supporting the emotional and mental wellbeing of those aged 7 and above and Louisa supporting around this with Secondary School age and above.
Karen also works with children from Primary School age and above and is also a specialist in the treatment of psychosomatic illness and sensory integration. She also supports those with neurological developmental differences, such as Dyspraxia and other challenges that are impacting negatively upon their daily functioning.
We can also work closely with school staff, parents and carers (where requested and beneficial) either online or in-person, depending on client location and preferences, to provide a truly holistic approach to client-care.
Signs your child may benefit from therapy:
- Persistent sadness or dis-ease
- Evolving low self-esteem
- Ongoing digestive difficulties and nausea
- Changes in behaviour, appetite or sleep patterns
- Difficulty concentrating or academic decline
- Withdrawal from friends or meaningful activities
- Increased anxiety
- School avoidance
The Role of Parents and Carers:
We recognise that parents are carers who are consistently involved and supportive of their child’s recovery, and who follow through on therapeutic recommendations, are a vital resource in a child’s recovery. We therefore strive to involve parents in their child’s therapy process, where children are consenting, which may involve designating time near the end of therapy sessions to facilitate this or sessions of carer education and support. To facilitate this we foster the triangle of care approach as a framework for best practice around this (for more on this see The Triangle of Care (carers.org).
Our approach
Whether you’re seeking individual support for your role as a parent or one to one Therapy for your child, we’re here to listen and assist. Our services are rooted in compassionate, heart and client-centred practice and trauma informed care and encapsulated by a genuine desire to help those we serve achieve their full potential. We understand the importance of creating an inclusive and neuro-affirming environment where clients can safely explore and express their identities and experiences. We therefore have a strong commitment to working with individuals who may feel stigmatized or fear rejection or discrimination, including those who identify as being LGBTQIA+ or neurodiverse.
We have extensive experience working with children, parents, carers and families who need individual or collective support to embrace their strengths and differences. This can often include offering an opportunity for education and screening around symptoms of certain health conditions such as PTSD, ADHD and ASD then providing signposting to services to explore pursuing an assessment for a medical diagnosis where appropriate.
Investment: £80-85 per 1 hour session (currently covering Penrith and Carlisle)
